Brexit, the Bible, and the only plausible solution

The recent events in the United Kingdom have shocked the world, and sent financial markets into turmoil. Around the globe, experts and the media have described this as “an earthquake”, “a tragedy”, and as I just heard on the radio this Sunday afternoon “an absolute catastrophe”. We have all heard a lot about this. What you may not have heard is the rather surprising news that the Bible has predicted events just like this.

I was surprised when the ‘Leave’ vote was successful. I did not expect them to win, at least not this early. But I am not shocked it occurred. Why? Because I believe the Bible accurately predicts the gradual separation of Britain from the European powers. The same prophecies that have foretold these events also go on to detail the ultimate end game: the return of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth. If you are interested in what this means, how I know this, and how this provides the only solution to our planet’s multitudinous problems, read on.
The Bible is a book of prophecy. Approximately one third of the entire Bible is made up of prophecies of one form or another. Many – if not most – of these have already been fulfilled in incredible detail, such as Cyrus and the overthrow of Babylon (Isaiah 45), the rise of the Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman empires (Daniel 2), or the prominence of the world’s largest ‘religious power’, the Roman Catholic Church (2 Thessalonians 2).

There are only handful of prophecies in the Bible that remain unfulfilled. Chief among them are those that promise the visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth to set up the Kingdom of God. One prophecy that is of utmost interest is found in Ezekiel 38, which follows hard on the heels of another of Ezekiel’s famous prophecies – the latter-day revival of the nation of Israel – in chapter 37. Ezekiel 38 focuses on the events that occur immediately before the actual physical return of Jesus Christ to the earth (which is a topic all of its own, of course).
This is where the recent events in the UK and Europe come in.

As this is not intended to be a long-winded exposition on Ezekiel 38, let me rudely summarise it in brief detail. The Bible predicts the rise of a huge, militarily powerful nation “from the uttermost parts of the north” – a power which in Ezekiel’s time (c.600 BC) was labelled “Rosh”. It speaks of a time when this nation will move out of its northern lands and come down to invade Egypt and the land of Israel, looking for a spoil. This again is a topic in its own right, but for the sake of brevity: I – and most other Christadelphians – believe a Russian-European alliance fits this description; certainly in the last decade Russia has been growing in military strength and casting hungry eyes down towards Israel and even as far as Egypt (I can provide news articles to elaborate on this. As an aside: watch for Russia and the European Union to look for a closer political-religious partnership. This is also another whole topic, but lock that thought away and keep an eye on the news).

Ezekiel 38 goes on to say that “in the latter years” – just before the return of Jesus Christ – this massive power will move south towards Israel and Egypt, “like a storm” with “a mighty army”. BUT: they will meet an obstacle. A group that the Bible labels as “Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, and the young lions thereof” appear to stand up to this mighty army. They aren’t successful – only Jesus Christ can be – but they attempt to stem the tide. But who are these mysterious parties, prophesied thousands and thousands of years ago? The territories of Sheba and Dedan we can look up – they equate to the geographical land of modern-day Saudi Arabia. But who is Tarshish? And what does this have to do with ‘Brexit’?
Many other prophecies help provide an outline of who the Tarshish referred to in the Bible is. For the sake of ease, here is a bullet point summary of its characteristics as outlined in Bible prophecy:

  • A nation built on the spirit of the merchant city of Tyre (Isaiah 23v6, Ezekiel 38v13)
  • Of Japhetic (European) origin (Genesis 10v4)
  • Rich in silver, iron, tin and lead (Ezekiel 27v12)
  • A major maritime power (Isaiah 2v16)
  • Actively trading in global markets (Ezekiel 27v25; 38v13)
  • From maritime lands (“isles”) far away (Isaiah 66v19)
  • To the far west of Israel (Jonah 1v3)
  • A God-fearing nation (Isaiah 51v5; 60v9)

In short – remember, this is just a summary – the key descriptors of Tarshish point unmistakably to the lands of Britain. It is not uncommon knowledge that Britain has throughout history referred to herself as “the old lion” and her colonies as “the young lions” (just Google the phrase “the empire needs men” to find a famous poster Britain distributed during WW1). It is a curious thing that this matches the exact phrase Ezekiel used thousands and thousands of years ago, when describing “Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof”.
Furthermore, another prophecy – this time found in Isaiah 60 – provides an outline of some events that occur after the return of Jesus Christ to the earth and the defeat of the Russian-European power. Unsurprisingly, this also refers to Tarshish: here we are told that this nation, along with Sheba and Dedan (remember them?) will be involved in helping return Israelites to their land (Isaiah 60v11).

So what does this all mean? And what does this have to do with Brexit? In short, the passages above help explain two things: not only did many students of the Bible expect Britain to eventually stand aside from Europe, but that in fact we – unlike most of the planet – are actually excited this has occurred.
But why on earth are we excited? Surely, given all the evidence, the consequences of ‘Brexit’ are going to be catastrophic! What is there to be excited about? And herein lies a critical point:
No true worshipper of God or follower of Jesus Christ should rejoice in another’s sufferings. That is not what we are about. That is not ‘the Gospel’. There is and can be only ONE reason we are excited: because these events are amongst the very final things to occur before the Bible prophesies the actual, physical return of Jesus Christ to the earth, to set up His Kingdom.
In absolutely no way are we happy that innocent, hardworking people – especially those in the UK – may suffer as a result of this vote. It is a tragedy. It could signal years of hardship and financial uncertainty. Jobs will be lost. Families will suffer. People will fear for their futures. But for the reader of the Bible, these things are expected. Because the Bible also explains what state the earth will be in immediately prior to the return of Jesus. In fact, it was Jesus himself (Luke 21v25-28) who told us:
And there shall be signs […] upon the earth DISTRESS OF NATIONS, with PERPLEXITY; the sea and the waves roaring; MEN’S HEARTS FAILING THEM FOR FEAR, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be SHAKEN. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then LOOK UP, AND LIFT UP YOUR HEADS; for your redemption draws nigh.
If ‘Brexit’ did not come as a surprise to the keen student of the Bible, it is because it is only one of many such momentous signs that we have been given to signal the soon return of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth.

Everywhere we look we see a world collapsing under the weight of its own problems; problems that history has taught us man simply does not have the capacity, the willpower, or the desire to truly overcome. In our own time we are witnesses of global climate change, widespread civil wars, poverty, disease, terrorism, inequality, violence and – critically – mountains of increasingly unsolvable debt created by greedy and corrupt human governments.

Answer me this: which political party is going to solve these global problems? Are these issues getting better, or worse? Will Trump/Clinton save America from their debt? Can Merkel protect Europe from ‘Islamic Terrorism’? Can Putin stop the Syrian civil war and ‘save’ Europe from the ‘migrant crisis’? (Will Boris Johnson get a haircut if he becomes Prime Minister?)
For thousands of years the Bible has been slowly but surely predicting global events with frightening accuracy. There is only one man who can provide the answers and solutions to a planet badly in need of them. His political policy and His vision for the earth is outlined in beautiful clarity and simplicity in Psalm 72.
I don’t profess to know when Jesus Christ will return. There may be just seven days, or seven weeks, or seven months to go. Or it may be seven more years. As He himself said “of that day and hour knows no man” (Matthew 24v36). But know this: it will happen.

To learn more about how the Lord Jesus Christ wants you to be a part of an everlasting world empire that can actually make a difference, open your Bible.
Why? Because you have been invited to play a part in its greatest and most exciting prophecy.
