God’s promises to David
Nearly 1,000 years after Abraham, when his descendants, the nation of Israel, had become a kingdom in the land of promise, God made further momentous promises to David the king: “I will set up thy seed after thee . . . and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be My son” (2 Sam. 7:12-14). These promises too were affirmed by God by covenant and oath (Ps. 89:3,4), and were reiterated by the angel Gabriel at the annunciation of Jesus’s birth (Lk. 1:32,33)
