Jesus is not God (John 14:9)

A @Christadelphians Video: Many Trinitarians quote this passage in support of their belief that Jesus is God. However, this is not what the passage says. Jesus says “He who has seen me has seen the Father”; he is showing that he reveals what God is like; elsewhere he is described as “The image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). When we look at Jesus we can see what God is like. Of course, Jesus is not the Father. Jesus is clearly not claiming to be God. At the start of the chapter (John 14:1), Jesus says “Believe in God; believe ALSO in me”. Later on, in John 14:28, he tells his disciples “The Father is greater than I am”.

This video is produced by the Gospel Online project which is arranged and supported by the Christadelphian community in the United Kingdom. # Summary This presentation explores the biblical understanding of the relationship between Jesus and God the Father, as revealed in the Gospel of John and the Epistles of Paul and the Hebrews. It examines the significance of Jesus’ statement “He who has seen me has seen the Father” and the implications for the nature of Jesus’ divinity and his relationship with the Heavenly Father.

# Highlights

🔍 Jesus’ statement “He who has seen me has seen the Father” does not mean that Jesus is literally God Almighty, but rather that he perfectly manifests and reveals the character of God.

🔍 The Apostle Paul describes Jesus as “the image of the invisible God” and the “express image of His person”, indicating that Jesus is the perfect representation of God, not God Himself.

🔍 The writer of Hebrews emphasises that Jesus is the “brightness of [God’s] glory and the express image of His person”, further reinforcing the idea that Jesus is the perfect manifestation of God, not God Himself.

🔍 As disciples of Jesus, we are called to emulate his Godly character and “put on the new man, which was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness”.
