European parliament head calls for EU federal government in the wake of Brexit

The head of the European parliament has called for federal government for the EU in the wake of Brexit.
Martin Schulz, the parliament president, said it was time for the European Commission to be replaced with a “genuine European government”.
An elected government answerable to the European parliament would “make for more transparent political accountability at the EU level,” Mr Schulz wrote in an opinion piece for Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.
If citizens were dissatisfied, they could “replace one European government with another through elections,” he wrote.
Mr Schulz has been a controversial figure as European parliament president. Together with Jean-Claude Juncker, the Commission president, he has been blamed for Brexit in some member states.
Both men have faced calls to resign over their determination to push for rapid further integration.
Angela Merkel could move to oust Mr Juncker within a year, an unnamed German minister told the Sunday Times over the weekend.
Mr Schulz insisted his proposal for a European government was not simply a question of “more Europe”.
He called for a clear delineation of powers between a federal government and member states, adding that Brussels should not interfere in matters that can be regulated at a national level.
