The Work of the Angels (summary of Rugby Prophecy day presentation)

This presentation is split into three sections

Angels – the heavenly host

The Bible gives us a picture of God’s throne, surrounded by his angels, ‘ministers’ that do his commandments, Ps 103: 19-104:4.

Other scriptures present the same picture:

“I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne…the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands”                              Revelation 5:11

“All the angels stood round about the throne…”                               Revelation 7:11

“Thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him”                                                                                                     Daniel 7:10

“The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them”                                                                                                              Psalm 68:17

The angels’ work is with the earth, as we recognise in our prayers…

“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven…”  Matthew 6:10

A glimpse of angelic operations can be seen in 1 Kings 22

The title ‘LORD of hosts’ is used to declare God’s work through the angels

The major themes and doctrines of the Bible include the work of the angels. An understanding of the work of the angels helps us to counter false teaching.

(Joy of angels in ‘new’ creation Job 38:7 Lk 2:9-14, 15:10)

Daniel – A Case Study

God sets the scene in Daniel regarding his power to remove and set up kings…

“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding” Daniel 2:21

The word “removeth” is translated different ways through the rest of Daniel as below:

3:27     “nor the smell of fire had passed on them”

4:31     “the kingdom is departed from thee”

5:20     “deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him”

6:8,12  “law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.

7:12     “beasts, they had their dominion taken away

7:14     “everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away

7:26     “But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion”

The word “setteth up” is translated different ways through the rest of Daniel as below:

2:39     “And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee”

2:44     “shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom”

4:17     “and setteth up over it the basest of men”

5:21     “God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it…”

7:4       “the first was like a lion…and made stand upon the feet as a man”

7:17     “these great beasts…are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.

7:24     “and the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise and another shall rise after them”

Nebuchadnezzar had to learn that God was most high…

“the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will”

Daniel 4:17,25,26, 32; 5:21

A specific Angel, Gabriel is mentioned who helped to ‘secure’ the way of salvation

unto thee”

white garment”?

Another angel, Michael helps Gabriel and also has his own role of ‘overseeing’ the nation of Israel through its history.

God is in Control

Look out for language that describes and requires the work of the angels:

‘Wondrous works’, ‘I am with you’, ‘God with us’, ‘Determined’, ‘Ordained’, ‘Appointed’

‘Determinate counsel’, ‘Raised up’

The ‘proverbs of providence’ make it clear that God is in control of man’s destiny.

16:1     “The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD”

16:4     “The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil”

16:9     “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps”

16:33   “The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD”

19:21   “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand”

20:24   “Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?”

21:1     “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD…he turneth it whithersoever he will”

Man’s horizons are generally quite short sighted. The new testament Greek work ‘horizo’ is translated in the following way:

Luke 22:22       “as it was determined

Acts 2:23         “determinate counsel of God”

Acts 17:26       “hath determined the times before appointed”

Acts 17:31       “Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained

Given the fact that our knowledge and horizons are very limited, we should not become involved in politics or protest movements.

 Gods’ Unlimited Horizons!

Psalm 90:2      “from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God”

Isaiah 46:10    “declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things    that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure

In our Milestones Update for the Rugby Prophecy Day we will be concentrating on Russia and looking at her steady expansion across the Middle East and around the Mediterranean. We see it as part of the preparation for her work of coming against Israel and being destroyed on the mountains of Israel. We conclude with a brief look at Israel’s new relationships with her neighbours and world powers. Again, we see this as part of the coming time of peace and security spoken of in the Bible, which sadly is not based upon Israel trusting in their God but in their own strength.
