#7 Why Believe the Gospels – Archaeology

How can we know that the Gospels contain a reliable record of the things that we describe?

One method is to compare the Gospel accounts with what has been discovered by archaeology.

The Gospels contain details of places, people, events and customs. Archaeological excavations have allowed some of these to be investigated and the finds have always confirmed one another.

#8 Why Believe the Gospels – Undesigned Coincidences

One way to check whether the Bible is reliable is to compare the accounts with one another.

Where an account contain insignificant details which correspond with different insignificant details in other accounts we have an undesigned coincidence, which is evidence that those accounts are accurate, even down to details.

The Gospels of the New Testament contain many such details and are full of undesigned coincidences.

#9 Why Believe the Gospels – Manuscript Evidence

The Gospels were written almost 2,000 years ago, and before printing was invented they were copied by hand. This has prompted some people to ask whether the text we have now is a reliable representation of the original writings. The answer comes in part from the huge number of witnesses we have to the text of the New Testament, almost 6,000 Greek manuscripts, another 18,000 manuscripts of translations into ancient languages and huge numbers of quotations in the works of ancient authors. In addition, the New Testament we have now contains details which match up with archaeological finds and which correspond between the Gospel in unexpected ways; these features would soon be lost if the copying of the New Testament was bad and the text had changed.Sadly, due to presenter preference –  this video has been restricted and is not available to view on this post.

#10 Why Believe the Bible – Unity and Consistency

The Bible was written by 40 or more people over a period of 1500 years in three different languages, but it contains one consistent message. It manages this in spite of the fact that it contains teaching on some of the most controversial subjects known to mankind. This could only be achieved if the content of the Bible is controlled by a mind which spans centuries and has the power to show truth to human beings – in other words God.

Why Believe the Bible – Fulfilled Prophecy

Our penultimate episode is led by Peter Forbes and examines the subject of Bible Prophecy.

The Bible is very clear about Gods plan and Purpose with the Earth. Prophecies are contained in both the old and new testaments.

Amos 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

#12 Why Believe the Bible – The Witness of Jesus

Jesus Christ rose from the dead. This shows that he is endorsed by God and that his message comes from God. One aspect of his message is that the Bible is a book to be trusted. He references the Old Testament many times (about 10% of the recorded words of Jesus are quotations from the Old Testament) and he tells us that the Old Testament is trustworthy (eg. Luke 24:25). Jesus also told us that the Apostles would be given the Holy Spirit to help them remember what to say and to teach them other things. Jesus is endorsing the whole of the Bible as inspired by God
