Changing his mode of teaching, Jesus began with this parable, requiring his hearers to think about whether their loyalty to God’s Word would endure. Three classes of hearers would fail, each for different reasons. Only one class can succeed in a lifelong commitment and bear fruit. We need to make a real effort to hold fast.
